Friends of the Millbrae Library SEPTEMBER 2008 VOL 30 NR 1
FML News - Text only edition
Well, the holiday season has passed and things are getting back to normal (whatever that is). I hope you all had wonderful holiday experiences and enjoyed the season and I wish you all a very happy, prosperous and healthy new year!
It is so nice to have a Branch Manager in Millbrae who is all-our-own. Sandy Wee came to us and hit the ground running. Sandy and our Millbrae Library staff are doing a fine job and we are fortunate to have such a capable team serving our patrons.
Our Big Book Sale in early December was a huge success. We netted nearly $3,000. I particularly want to thank Judi Sullivan for her hard work, not only for managing all the preparations for the sale, including recruiting and coordinating our volunteer staffers, sorting and pricing the books, set-up for the sale (and taking down) but for the countless hours she contributes behind the scenes in our book store. Just look below at the scene, itself, with the inventory all prepared for the sale. Thanks, Judi!
Thanks also to all of you who volunteered to staff our book sale. We had a great turn out of helpers. Without you we could never achieve such a level of success. I have often said that our book sales are a lot of work but they are also a lot of fun.

Just a reminder: January is membership renewal month for all but life members. Please remember to get your renewal dues in. While membership renewal is on your mind, its a great time to recruit new Friends. Members are the life blood of Friends of the Millbrae Library so please talk to your friends and neighbors about the good work done by FML and encourage them to join. Additional sign-up envelopes are available in the library.
Enclosed in this newsletter is the Millbrae Library program survey, We Want to Hear from You. Our staff needs this information so that adult library program offerings can be better designed to suit the needs, interests and desires of our patrons. Please take the time to complete the survey and return it to the library.
It is a pleasure to announce that Rob Silber and Carmen Delano have agreed to serve on our very important Farris Fund Finance Committee. Rob and his wife, Miriam, have two children in the Millbrae schools and are long time members and supporters of FML. Rob holds a degree in Business/Economics from UC Santa Barbara and is employed as Director of Supply Chain Management for a biotechnology company. Robs education and professional experience make him a Farris Fund natural. Carmen has a degree in pharmacy from Washington State University and was employed in San Francisco as a pharmacist before raising a family and becoming a librarian and long-time advisor to our book sales. Carmen recently retired and now serves on the FML Board. She will be an asset to the Farris Fund Finance Committee.
Have you ever wondered how materials are selected for the Millbrae Library? Now is your chance to find out. Sandy Wee, Millbrae Library's new Branch Manager, was welcomed and introduced to the community at a reception on November 20, 2008, coincidentally, Millbrae Library's 4th anniversary. She actually started her position on Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Everyone is very happy to have Sandy as our permanent Library Manager.
Sandy received her Bachelor's degree from the University of California-Berkeley and Master's Degree in Library Science from San Jose State University. In addition, she holds several certificates. She has over 18 years of public library experience most recently as the Branch Manager of the Manor Branch of the San Leandro Public Library. Her previous experience includes, ten years working as the Youth Services Supervisor for the Los Gatos Public Library, three years working as a Librarian for the San Francisco Public Library at the Chinatown Branch, and numerous assignments throughout the Bay Area as a Librarian, Library Assistant, Library Intern and Library Clerk. Sandy is not entirely new to SMCL; she has worked at the Millbrae Library and other libraries in the system for the past eleven years as an Extra-Help Librarian.
A few words from Sandy: “I feel very lucky to be part of the Millbrae Community and to work with a wonderful Library team and supportive community. Thank you Friends for the lovely welcome and reception. With such a great staff, I know the Library will continue to thrive and be one of the community's favorite places to be.” (a picture of Sandy Wee is included)
